Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Not sure how this all works? No problem.

We’re the only masonry company in Toronto that specializes in reclaimed and surplus masonry materials, so our products & methods may be different than ordering from a typical masonry supplier.

If you don’t find the answers you’re looking for below, email us!

Material Sourcing & Availability

  1. Where do you source your reclaimed brick and stone?

    • We partner with deconstruction & demolition companies, homeowners, and community organizations throughout Ontario to salvage materials from buildings slated for demolition or renovation, ensuring that valuable masonry materials are diverted from landfill. Most of our current brick inventory was reclaimed from Toronto buildings, manufactured right here in Toronto at prominent brick facilities including Don Valley Brick Works and John Price Brick Company from the late 1800s through the mid 20th century.

  2. Are you able to match a specific heritage brick or stone?

    • We have a wide variety of many of Ontario’s most common historic masonry materials, meaning that we likely have something that can work for your project. Our inventory is constantly changing: if we don’t have what you’re looking for we will work to try and source it from our network of suppliers.

Need a specific brick or stone match? We can often match samples or photos provided by clients.

  3. How often does your inventory change?

    • Our product listings are unique and constantly evolving based on what is available for salvage and which products are in highest demand. We keep our stock up-to-date on our products page, and recommend revisiting frequently or contacting us to see if we have materials suitable for your project's timeline. You can also follow us on Instagram to see the latest arrivals.

  4. How do you determine the age and origin of the materials?

    • Since we are often involved in the demolition/deconstruction process ourselves, we take the time to research as much as we can about the original building based on owner accounts, archive imagery, and historic directories and maps. Our founders are heritage masons and have many years of experience working with and identifying different types and vintages of Ontario masonry.

Quality, Cleaning & Processing

  1. Are the reclaimed materials structurally sound and safe to reuse?

    • Yes. All salvaged masonry goes through a quality inspection. Bricks are cleaned of old mortar and graded to ensure they meet standards for reuse. In every product listing, we note if the bricks are A-Grade (/face brick) or B-grade (common or tumbled). Compression testing has shown reclaimed bricks to meet or surpass modern building code strength requirements.  If you need specific verifications or test results for your project, please inquire.

  2. How do you clean the salvaged brick and stone?

    • Depending on the material, we clean by hand or use mechanical cleaning methods, including specialized machinery like the Brique Recyc machine, to efficiently remove old mortar without damaging the material surface. This ensures a high-quality yield and good-looking ready-to-use products.

  3. Do the bricks come already cleaned, or is additional preparation required?

    • Our products are sold fully cleaned, processed, and palleted—ready for immediate use in projects.

  4. What is the typical "yield" of usable material from a deconstruction/salvage project?

    • Depending on the methods of deconstruction and at which stage we receive the products, the yield of reusable masonry material can vary greatly on each project.

By the time the materials reach us, our specialized processing can achieve a very high yield, often 90-95% of the salvaged masonry, minimizing our own waste.

Sustainability & Environmental Impact

  1. What is the environmental benefit of using reclaimed masonry?

    • Using reclaimed materials drastically reduces a project's embodied carbon. Manufacturing new heritage-match brick can be up to 79 times more carbon-intensive than using reclaimed materials. Because we salvage from Ontario buildings and can process the materials locally, we also save on transportation costs and emissions compared to shipping materials produced abroad. Visit our Sustainability page to learn more.

  2. How does using reclaimed material help with the circular economy?

    • We actively divert valuable, high-quality materials from landfills, keeping them in use and reducing the demand for new resource extraction and manufacturing. These processes add jobs to the local economy, which is a value-added benefit of choosing reclaimed material for your project.

  3. Do you have documentation of the materials' environmental savings?

    • Yes, we commissioned this report, including carbon footprint assessments, to help clients document their project's sustainability impact. We can also provide pre-deconstruction assessments of properties to estimate the amount of material that can be salvaged and reused, and advise on methods to reduce waste when old buildings need to come down.

Purchasing & Logistics

  1. What quantities do you sell? Is there a minimum purchase?

    • Depending on the product type, our prices are listed as per unit (brick and slate) or per square foot (tile and stone). Because these are historic materials collected from unique small to medium sized buildings, we have a finite quantity of each material and may need to source additional stock if you are interested in a product that is in high demand. There is no minimum purchase, but we may be able to provide discounts for large quantity orders.

  2. Do you offer delivery services?

    • Yes, we can arrange delivery across Ontario for an additional fee. Costs are calculated based on the distance from our yard in northeast Toronto and the volume of the order.

  3. Can I visit your yard to inspect the materials before purchasing?

    • Absolutely. We highly encourage site visits by appointment to view the materials in person prior to purchase, as color and texture can vary. We would love to show you around!
